The first festival was a carnival with rides, games, food, and vendor booths in a Hollywood parking lot. Continuing hostility and harassment from the Los Angeles Police Department led CSW to relocate the parade and festival in to a more welcoming.
The parade and festival commemorate one of the most important events in gay history, the rebellion at the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar on Christopher Street in New York. The most recent flare-up, as unpleasant as the vitriol seemed, was far from the worst of times for festival organizers and the city, though.
